The Secret Garden Table Runner Top

The second applique block for the table runner is done! For this block, I used and reduced a flower from Esther Aliu’s On My Window Flowers Bloom pattern and the basket and layout from the same Secret Garden block as block 1. I love mixing and matching different elements from different patterns.

A bird came to visit. Multiple brown tones were used to add extra depth to the basket work.

I concentrated on the yellow, yellow/orange and purple/burgundy colors for the flowers and added a red and yellow bird. The bird is nestled comfortably amongst the bright flowers.

I love the look of the double sided blanket stitch!
The yellow centers are stitched using a double sided blanket stitch. I love the starburst effect! Variegated yellow/orange/tan thread adds even more dimension and texture.

Finally, the blocks are joined and borders added! The blocks are 17 x 10 1/2″. The sashing is 3/4″ side and the yellow narrow border is 1″.

The runner is constructed so that it is has a right side up design on each side,

Look closely, I added a flange to the narrow border! I love the way a flange adds another color and depth to a project, while being much rpeasier than adding piping or a tiny border. a future blog will focus on flanges.

Sewing the flange to the narrow yellow border. I keep the seam to under 1/4″ so it won’t show when the second border is added.
The runner center…more little birds!

The friend that requested this table runner wanted a bright table runner with jewel toned flowers and birds. It certainly is bright and it’s ready for quilting!

Happy quilting! Lennea
