Tacoma Poncho

I found the pattern a few years ago (maybe 2018?) at the Puyallup Sew Expo perusing the Pendleton booth. Pendleton’s lush wool blankets, shirts and jackets are popular here in the Pacific Northwest and before I retired, my Pendleton jackets were my winter uniform.

The poncho was on a mannequin, made up in a rich brown jacquard and I touched it longingly. Yes, I definitely want one to make one of these! Rummaging through the sample lightweight wools, a teal/black with warm highlights caught my eye and my order was placed.

Several weeks later, I received my package. But it was spring and it was put aside into my apparel fabric stash.

So here we are in 2021. Both the lush fabric and the rainy, chill weather were demanding that I sew up the poncho.

This poncho pattern isn’t really a true poncho, as it opens down the front. But I prefer this style as my long, fuzzy/curly hair isn’t made for pulling a garment over my head while out and about. And ponchos don’t have pockets. The pattern didn’t, either, but that is no reason not to add one.

The directions are sparse and basic. The one actual pattern piece is a neckline, so it sews up quickly once you get oriented to the directions.

Making a flat fell seam with my walking foot. The walking foot worked beautifully for the wool. I am using a size 14 Top Stitch needle.
I finally read the directions on my walking foot and used the fabric guide to do hee topstitch hem.
A pocket! I serged around the raw edges before turning them under and securing with hem tape.
Top stitching was done using a high sheen, 40 wt quilting thread in gold.
I love a topstitched collar.
Vintage abalone button from the button tin.
Completed!

  4. Fabulous fabric Lennea, SO glad its soft, so many can be harsh. Love the desing, can picture some one sitting at a upright loom making this design years ago. Stunningly beautiful and you have made it in to the perfect jacket. Can picture you with a cuppa and your pipe wearing it. Cheers from OZ
