Carpenter Square Log Cabin

Back to work on the Carpenter Square Log Cabin! This is a great concept, combining the popular Carpenter Square pattern, which is made from HSTs and using Log Cabin blocks in their place. Then began the process of hunting fabrics and finding something that I loved that also met my hubby’s approval. I spotted an Island Batik Twilight Chic layer cake pack at the Port Townsend, WA Union Quilt Shop and was captivated by the teals and deep colors. Hubby approved, but with the caveat of bringing in more browns.

In late fall, still playing with fabric options, I started considering buying EQ8 quilt design software. Hubby encouraged me to buy it and in late Nov, I started playing with EQ8. I ordered sufficient back ground fabric, which has a faint paisley design that we love, and teals in the Twilight Chic line and continued to look at browns.

What better way to learn than by doing? My favorite learning style. Being very family with log cabins and understanding them well, I decided to put the QuiltFox Carpenter Log Cabin into EQ8. It was so much fun! We narrowed our Twilight fabric choices using the software to audition fabric placement. Then we started ordering some small yardages of brown batiks (we looked at shops locally, but alas brown were few and far between). These were imported into EQ8 and we got serious about designing our quilt. The pattern is a King Size 105″ square, which I down-sized to a Queen. We also wanted it to specifically fit our bed, which has an adjustable frame under the mattress that needs to be hid. EQ8 made it easy to adjust my border size to find the perfect width. The final quilt top size is 93″ x 96″.

All 64 squares are now made up and sewn together along with a wide border. The sandwiching is complete and now it goes to the pile of tops needing quilting.
